How many discussions have we had with our children about money? More is caught than is taught. We may have said things like, “Don’t go get in debt” or “Do you think money grows on trees?” That may have been the extent of our conversations. However, have we sat down with our kids and discussed topics like real estate, savings, investments, and insurance, etc.?
Newsflash! These life lessons are not being taught in a majority of public schools. The Bible verse in Proverbs 22:6 states : “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it" (KJV). This verse is not just talking about spiritual training. It is discussing finances as well! If we don’t have these conversations with our kids, who will? We must first get educated on these topics ourselves so that we can pass these lessons to the next generation. Each generation should not have to start from Ground Zero in the area of finances.
My husband and I were watching the show “Going From Broke” (a reality show that helps everyday people with their finances) on the streaming service Crackle. We watched the episode “The Not-So-Great Resignation” which focused on Desireé Faye, founder and CEO of Young and Brilliant. One of the creations of this company is a book entitled Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship. I highly encourage people to check out her website for more information and how to order the materials at https://www.youngandbrilliant.org/
