Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day!  We gave flowers to the mothers on Mother’s Day.  Now we must give Fathers the respect that’s due to them on their special day. Not enough recognition is given to the dads (especially to men of color) who provide and care for their children.  Today, I reflect and appreciate my natural dad, the dad of my three children, and my spiritual fathers.

Self-Care

Men need self-care too.  One of the best books I can recommend for fathers (actually all men) is the self-care book And Then We Rise: A Guide To Loving And Taking Care of Self by Common.

When I started listening to this audiobook, (please refer to last week's blog about audiobooks) the author’s words immediately registered with me.  Topics I have read about in self-care books and magazine articles are mirrored in this book.     Common also shares his thoughts on food, the body, the mind, and the soul.

Memoir

One memoir I highly recommend is Will by Will Smith. I enjoyed this audiobook in which Smith examines the relationship between himself and his father and the type of father he strived to be.  Side Note:  I loved his performances in King Richard (Smith portrayed the father of Venus and Serena Williams) and The Pursuit of Happyness (Smith portrayed Chris Gardner as another positive father figure).

Politics

I had to recognize the first African-American president who ran an eight-year scandalous-free administration and who is also a best-selling author. President Barack Obama authored books including The Audacity of Hope and A Promised Land while being husband and dad.

Faith

There are a plethora of books by men of faith including Bishop TD Jakes, Apostle Fredrick K.C. Price, Pastor James D. Corbett, and Pastor Derrel Ward. These men of faith tackle topics such as grief, racism, health, finances, answered prayers, etc.

Thank you to the fathers who have taken the time to put their wisdom and insight into books and audiobooks for us!

I salute all father's, especially black fathers. The world wants us to believe you don't exist, not so! As a black woman trust me we see you, need you, and appreciate all of you. Literature that has the black male perspective is amazingly rewarding and is a part of American history that can't be erased. So, to the greatest men alive Happy Father's Day!
